A first glimpse at the all-new Ford S-MAX was given at last year’s Paris Motor Show, with the production model going on sale in the UK this summer. Full details have now been revealed on the family favourite, and buyers can look forward to a host of new features plus updated underpinnings.
The all-new S-MAX will be built on the same modular platform as the new Mondeo, but doesn’t deviate too far from the outgoing example. Research from Ford showed that motorists looked on the current version favourably, and therefore chose to enhance rather than reimagine the look. The chrome trapezoidal grille and sculpted headlamps are two subtle tweaks, with the overall profile remaining largely unchanged.
Inside there are even more practical features including individually power-folding seats on the second and third rows – a segment first. The second row slides to give those in the rear more legroom, and folds away completely for a van-like flat load area.
An abundance of new technology for added comfort and convenience can be found inside. An electrically adjustable steering column is one other pioneering feature for the segment, joined by heated and cooled massage seats as an option. Intelligent Speed Assist is added for the first time in any Ford. It reads road signs while registering information from the satellite navigation system to detect when a speed limit change is coming up, and slows the car automatically to that speed. The electronic parking brake means an added storage area on the centre console, while the air vents in the rear have been placed on the roof to create more space.
The S-MAX’s new tech means a boost to the car’s safety credentials too. The uprated active parking system now leads the car into perpendicular parking spaces as well as parallel spots, and features a cross traffic alert system to warn you of approaching vehicles when reversing. A front-mounted camera shows images to the left and right of the vehicle when at a junction, and it’s supported by blind spot monitoring plus lane keeping assist.
A clean and refined engine family
Ford will offer petrol and diesel engines in numerous states of tune to suit the needs of more buyers. The two Ecoboost petrols are a 158bhp 1.5-litre and the 237bhp 2.0-litre, both returning rewarding output, with no lack of pulling power. Three diesels will also be available – the 148bhp and 178bhp single-turbo units and the 210bhp twin-turbo at the top of the range. Automatic all-wheel drive is among the options for the powertrain range, and it monitors the road every 16 milliseconds before adjusting performance for optimum control.
