Fireworks Safety Tips:

If an organised event isn’t for you and you’ve decided to have some fireworks at home, please make safety your priority. Having fireworks at home can be extremely fun for all the family as long as they’re used safely.

Follow the Firework Code to make sure everyone stays safe this Bonfire Night.

  1. Plan your firework display.
  2. Keep your fireworks in a closed box.
  3. Use only one firework at a time.
  4. Read the instructions carefully on each firework, as instructions may vary.
  5. Light the firework at arm’s length using a taper.
  6. Once lit, stand well back from the firework.
  7. Do not return to a lit firework if it has not gone off.
  8. Do not throw fireworks.
  9. Direct rocket fireworks away from spectators and not in the line of any trees.
  10. Never use paraffin or petrol on a bonfire and keep naked flames away from fireworks.

On the night the following items are essential for setting off fireworks carefully:

  1. Torch
  2. Bucket of water
  3. Eye protection
  4. Gloves
  5. Bucket of soft earth
  6. Supports for Catherine wheels or rockets

When it comes to Bonfire Night, take precautions to make sure your pet is safe, relaxed and comfortable.

  1. Keep your pets indoors. Don’t forget about those animals which normally live outside like rabbits and guinea pigs, bring them inside too.
  2. Although they may still be able to hear them, the TV or music will help drown out the sound of the sudden bangs.
  3. Minimise the flashing lights in the sky by keeping the curtains closed and the lights on.
  4. Create a distraction, toys and treats are a great way of keep your pet entertained and unaware of what’s going on around them.
  5. Remain normal! If you jump, they’ll jump. Act like you would normally with your pets and they won’t suspect a thing.

So whether you’re going to watch a local organised fireworks display, are staying at home to create your own display or still haven’t quite decided what you’re doing, make sure you stay safe this Bonfire Night.
